The SHOUT SA Library

2014 Making learning cooler than crime: In the few schools that do have libraries, they are grey storerooms for books that inspire little, if any, affinity to learning and imagination. What’s more – the only cool, bright, interesting things these children see are the cars and clothing belonging to the criminal gangsters around their townships. Thus, they grow up believing crime is cool. Shout wanted to break this cycle by inspiring kids with a fun, beautiful place to learn and read – preventing future crime rather than trying to address it later. To do so they partnered with MAL and the Architects of Justice to install libraries in underprivileged areas – three to date – which used design to inspire young minds and expose them to a cool, bright, beautiful world beyond their current circumstance
